Rem athlete to do us proud in Germiston

Learner in Grade 5 to represent Randfontein, Randfontein Primary School and Gauteng at the National Athletics Championship in Germiston.

Sphiwe Kubheka, a Randfontein Primary School learner in Grade 5, will represent his school, town and province at the National Athletics Championship in Germiston on Friday, 15 and Saturday, 16 March, having recently finished third in the 100m sprint at a provincial competition.

Tumelo Sekhokhoane, Sphiwe’s coach, said the school was proud of his achievement and that he has put the school on the map. He added that although Sphiwe only came third at provincial level, he and the school are confident that he will outdo himself in the nationals.

Sphiwe Kubheka said he is aiming for gold in Germiston.

“He has been preparing for this big challenge for some time. He has the drive and we believe that it is possible that he can go for gold. We are confident and excited that he has made it this far.

“We only started training in January while other children started in September last year, but we are very impressed with the strides he has made so far.

“Sphiwe is a runner to watch out for!” Tumelo said.
