Six schools go toe to toe in athletics at Ram

Six primary schools competed in over 80 athletic items during a Randfontein Circle A Athletics meeting hosted at Laerskool Randfontein on Wednesday.

Six primary schools did battle in 82 athletics items during a Randfontein Circle A Athletics meeting hosted at Laerskool Randfontein (ram) on Wednesday, 6 February.

The participating schools were FJL Wells Primary, Setholela Primary, Mohlakano Primary, Malerato Primary, Ram and Randfontein Primary. The event saw youngsters from as young as U/7 up to U/13 (boys and girls) compete in various items such as high jump, shot put, 1 200m and long jump to name but a few, from 9am until 3pm. The first event was the 200m heats for girls U/13 and the last was the 100m for boys U/13.

Six schools participated in the athletics.

The full results will be made available to the Herald on Thursday, 7 February.

Rickus Kruger, the sub-district athletics chairperson and field referee for the day said schools first compete against one another in their districts. The best athletes will then be selected to participate in a District Level 2 event to be held on Wednesday, 13 February.

“After that, the schools will be competing at provincial level and eventually at national level,” Rickus said.

Learners participated in high jumps.

Maritza du Toit, a coordinator on the day, added, “We are very proud of our Circle A group of athletes and looking forward to the season. There is some great talent coming through.”
