Just 12 and already hip-hopping

Bianca Redelinghuys, 12, told the Herald people need to watch this space, and make way for her, as she will be coming on stage with guns blazing.

Our hip and young princess of hip hop dance, Bianca Redelinghuys, says those who want to challenge her on stage first need to ‘swag’.

The 12-year-old said hip hop dancing is something she takes to heart – she aims to be one of the recognised dancers of the genre in town.

Bianca told the Herald people need to watch this space, and make way for her, as she will be coming on stage with guns blazing.

Starting off with ballet at very tender age, Bianca said she was challenged by her father to put her hip hop skills to the test, and since then has not looked back.

I started when I was only six years, and I have always made sure that I practise almost every day,” Bianca said.

She also attributes her flair to the genre, to hip hop-themed films like Honey (2003) and the franchise of Step Up that began in 2006.

“After realising that I was serious about it, I asked for support from my parents. I then joined Snapback Studios to improve my dance moves.”

She said some of the her routine moves are knockin’, wacking, bee-boy. Bianca said hip hop is not only beneficial as a form of an exercise, she can also express herself through the activity.

“Dance is like my life, I love it. It has always been the best thing I have ever done. It also helps me to relax and I always have fun when I do it,” she said.

Asked what one needs in order to be a good dancer, Bianca said it usually takes someone who has a bubbly personality, who is able to groove.

“You need proper shoes to get the moves right, and to wear loose-fitting clothes, and make sure that you drink enough water while doing it. Most importantly, a person needs lots of patience and lots of practice to become better.”

Some of the challenges Bianca has participated in include River Dance in Pretoria, Roodepoort Dance Festival, Live It on the Floor Competition at the Randfontein Show and Hip Hop Dance South Africa in Cape Town.

I want to see myself succeeding as one of the best dancers in the whole world, and one day make a movie about hip hop dance,” Bianca added.
