Colossus ready to host U Bank race, just days before New Year

Chairman of the host club at this year’s U Bank Challenge said excitement is building ahead of the U Bank Challenge, just 30 days away!

The CBD will once again come alive with road running activity in the U Bank Challenge, which will be hosted by Colossus Aerobic Athletics Club on Sunday, 30 December.

The race was previously known as the Joseph Madodla Challenge and was run on the last day of the year in 2016 and 2017.

As far as racing on the road is concerned, it remains to be seen if local star, Kabelo Melamu, will have what it takes to finally win and grab the gold medal this time round, as he failed on the two previous occasions.

We are expecting a showdown between Kabelo and defending champ, Mbongeni Nxazozo,” said Vusi Mathiya, chairman of Colossus.

He added, “The 10km event and 5km fun run will both start at 8am at the Greenhills Stadium and will be a split at Village Square. Five hundred T-shirts depicting the name of the new partners (U Bank) will be up for grabs for the first entrants. Medals will be presented to all finishers”.

While the men’s 10km race is set to be a humdinger, the women’s race is also one not to miss, with local lass Cornelia Joubert, from Boxer AC, one of the favourites.
