Randmark up for the 947 challenge

Randmark will be riding for Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.

A total of 34 members of the Randmark Run, Walk, Cycle Club will take on this year’s Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge on Sunday, 18 November.

This year’s race is expected to see about 28 000 cyclists who will be riding for various causes in their respective communities.

Nico Smit, one of the Randmark Run, Walk, Cycle Club members, said all members of the club expect a tough race but are ready for the challenge.

“It is a new route and we do not know what to expect. It is a different way around, and we do not know whether the new uphill is going to affect us or not,” Nico said.

He added that among the club’s riders will be four first-timers and one member doing his 22nd race.

Nico said Randmark has been sponsored by the Blue Bottle and will be riding for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation for this year’s challenge.

Besides Randmark, Ryan Diesel of Geotab, an organisation that has been assisting with raising funds for Jano Fourie, will be riding in this year’s 947 cycle challenge promoting Jano’s biography, which was written by Hanlie Thiel under the title Grenslose Genade.

Jano Fourie was born in 2013, but his parents haven’t had the pleasure of seeing him grow as a normal child. Instead, they have been taking turns at night to make sure he keeps breathing. In an exclusive interview with the Herald, Jano’s mother, Marijke, shared the story of the family’s desperate attempts to find a cure for their son, amid the fear brought on by severe seizure attacks.

Ryan said their purpose is not only to raise funds, but also to create awareness for those with children who may suffer from a similar condition.
