‘We need more games of this kind’
The De Lucho Spectrum high school soccer tournament was praised for its success and there are even plans to expand in future.
A goal in the 34th minute by Boitshoko Kitims meant Lukhanyo Secondary School beat rivals Thuto Lehakwe Secondary School 1–0 in the final of the De Lucho Spectrum High School Challenge held during the recent school holidays.
The event was held over four days and hosted at the Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng.
Ephraim Molingoane, Lukhanyo’s goalkeeper, showed real professionalism as he was on song to save numerous shots at goal from Thuto Lehakwe attackers. This is no surprise as he is an U/19 Orlando Pirates representative.
“We wish for more games of this kind. Rivalries were quite popular back in the day and another one I can remember is AB Phokompe playing against Donald Ace Khuse,” said Jomo Cetisho, sports teacher at Lukhanyo, who was captain of Phahama in the 80s.
“The boys are disciplined and we won all our games technically. We just stuck to our game plan and it paid off,” he added.
The De Lucho Spectrum is a high school soccer tournament dedicated to Mohlakeng’s favourite son, Karabo ‘ Stitch De Lucho’ Tshepe, a Black Leopards player in the Professional Soccer League (PSL).
“I am happy with the turnout and the support of the teams, some from outside our area, as well as the Local Organising Committee, who worked tirelessly during the tournament. In the near future we are looking at increasing the number of school teams to 16 and introducing other sporting codes to the tournament,” Stitch said.
