Kickboxing trio bag seven medals in East Rand
A trio of kickboxers from a club in Westonaria held Randfontein's name high at a tournament on the East Rand recently.
A trio from the Tri Dragons Westonaria Kickboxing Club bagged seven medals at the Great North 2 Championships in Brakpan on the East Rand on Saturday, 25 August.
By winning at least one gold medal each, they made their club proud and held Randfontein’s name high. The club operates under the supervision of Shihan Brandon Fourie.
Jannie Barnard Junior, who is also an instructor, received gold, silver and bronze while his younger sister, Jo-Anne Barnard and Lorette van Biljon each brought home gold and silver medals.
“All three of them did exceptionally well and this will promote our club,” said their instructor, Jannie Barnard Senior. He added the Great North 2 is one of the biggest competitions of the year in the kickboxing fraternity. However, a tougher challenge is lying ahead for the club.
Jannie said even though the teams performed well, they cannot rest on their laurels and that the trio will face tougher international competition at the Destiny Challenge to be held on 29 and 30 September in Stellenbosch.
“The styles/ modes are much more advanced than in the Great North 2. At the Destiny Challenges we will be doing power breaking, which includes breaking roof tiles.”
Jannie Senior said he would like to bring home a few medals. “I strongly believe that my students will do well,” he added.
He continued saying that winning the medals has shown they are doing something right.
“To me it means a lot,” Jannie Senior said.
