Athletes give their best at local CGA event

Local athletes put up fight at CGA Cross Country League event on home soil.

Frans Mola, one of Randfontein’s top athletes made his presence felt at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country League 6 event held in his home town.

The Simunye Gymnasium was abuzz on Saturday, 7 July as Frans, who runs for Gold Fields and was silver medallist at this year’s Comrades Marathon, made his debut as veteran in the men’s 8km event. Baobab Athletics Club was the host club.

Although Frans made his intentions clear early on by giving it his all and taking the lead, he couldn’t maintain the pace throughout, allowing Simon Mpholo from Rockies Road Runners to pass him. Frans eventually finished in second place.

“I was just trying to test the strength of the vets after having run in the sub veterans category before. I realise now that the early lead was a bit suicidal,” he said.

Having placed second, Frans now qualifies for the last two league events to be held in Soweto and Alberton, as well as the CGA Championships event in Kagiso in August.

In the 4km event, Kabelo Melamu lived up to expectations and gave early leader Deracious Makhubalo from Bedfordview a run for his money. He finished second in a time of 17 minutes and 24 seconds while his KMPG team mate and training partner, Itumeleng Sesiko, also finished second in the men’s 8km event with a time of 23 minutes.

Lebo Phalula from Boxer won the women’s senior 10km event, followed by Farida Zwane from Tembisa in second. Another local, Cornelia Joubert, also from Boxer had to be happy with third place and time of 36 minutes and 7 seconds.
