Thousands raised for abandoned babies

UPDATE: R40 000 raised at Just in Time Baby Sanctuary golf day.

R40 000 was raised when about 60 Randfontein golfers teed off at the golf day organised to benefit the Just in Time Baby Sanctuary, on Friday, 1 June.

Coordinator of the golf day, Jolani Dreyer, said the initiative’s aim was to raise funds to enable the baby sanctuary to function for three months and assist with operational costs.

“Not only do we have the golfing community supporting the day, we also have sponsors that have donated money,” Jolani said.

She said each four-ball group paid R2 000 to take part in the tournament.

Brad Wright swung his clubs for a good cause.

“They played in teams of two, competing against each other within each four-ball, but we also had overall winners, and everyone who played received a prize.”

She said prizes ranged from leaf blowers and jewellery vouchers to liquor hampers and all sorts of goodies.”Even the player that comes last will receive a prize,” Jolani added.

Georgina Caetano, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Just in Time Baby Sanctuary, said the funds raised at the golf day will go a long way to uplift the organisation.

“We need to do things like this more often, because our organisation is not supported by the government. We really need the ongoing support of both the community and its businesses, because the issue of abandoned babies is real. There are so many babies out there who desperately need homes like ours to care for them.

Brad Wright and Brad Meyer took time out from their daily lives to support the golf day.

“We need people to understand that finance is key as we need to provide nappies, formula and clothing. Without money we cannot function,” Georgina said.

Ben Morgenrood Auto, Celebrino Eventavasion, Romaneli Designs, Loelin’s Arts and Crafts, Pets Control Specialists West Rand, Blue Bottle Liquors, Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate, Aloe Signs, Steed Electrical, Sy Meat Market, Shawn Coetzee and Shorty’s Mini-Market were all on the list of valued supporters of the tournament and the sanctuary.
