Randgate boxers rising to the challenge

Randgate Boxing Club keeps on producing young stars for the future – one of them is going to Morocco soon.

Willie Gonsalves, Randgate Boxing Club’s head coach and owner, spoke to the Herald about the latest happenings in his club.

Willie has been running the club for 15 years after his parents had managed it for a whole 32 years. This club offers free boxing classes, even though they do not have sponsors.

“I do it for the love of boxing,” said Willie.

On 31 March, eight of his club’s boxers were among the 44 who took part in the Rainbow Tournament where his boxers from won eight belts.

They are Hardus Jacobs, Donell, Justin and Keenan Kloupas, Thembelani Jojo and Bandile Jojo.

On 6 and 7 April, Hardus and Harry Joubert took part in another tournament where Hardus took out his opponent in the second round. Harry got bronze for his fight.

Amorie Gonsalves will be going to Morocco from 5 -13 May, where she will be representing South Africa in the qualifying round for the Youth Olympics. Amorie has been doing extremely well and Willie and everybody at the club are very proud of her.

“She is standing out in boxing in South Africa,” said Willie.

Willie is also proud of his up and coming boxers. On 9 June, they will take part in the Provincial Development Tournament, to which 44 boxers were invited. Wille invites everybody to come see some boxing action, and entrance is free. Randgate Boxing Club is producing excellent boxers, and the future looks bright for them.
