A local soccer fanatic revives a local football

Dave is determined to discover and develop the raw talent of the local youth.

Seeiso ‘Dave’ Makhoana is a 30-year-old resident of Randfontein who has taken it upon himself to discover and develop the raw soccer talent of the local youth. In order to do so, he has roped in Ace Duiker, who used to run the Greenhills Soccer Academy until 2014.

Dave, who has been a resident of Randfontein for 20 years, is excited about getting Ace on board. He said he came to the conclusion that looking for and developing the youth’s latent talent was important after he realised that many of them don’t know they have this talent, and waste their time hanging around in parks instead of nurturing themselves and their abilities.

He went on to say that he will use the skills he honed in 2006, when he joined Super Tigers Football Academy, to guide the youngsters.

“I had an opportunity to play for Orlando Pirates’ U/21s in Mayfair in 2006,” he said. “I’ve been trying to rope Ace into assisting me for a long time. I met him in 2003/ 4 when I was playing school rugby, and wasn’t really good at soccer. He told me he wanted to open an Academy in Greenhills and urged us as kids to participate in any available physical activity.

“He said this would help us with discipline in all areas of our lives. I was quite encouraged by what Ace stood for, as he ran the Academy wholeheartedly until 2014, when he had to relocate, leaving the youth of Randfontein without a club.”

Dave said he has been determined to revive the Academy, and bring back the legend for some time. “I pleaded with Ace for three years, asking him to come back to Randfontein, and telling him about all the talent I am seeing.

“The reason I kept bugging him was because of my history with him. I played for Orlando Pirates during my youth and couldn’t help but notice how special Ace was. I believe he was a good soccer professional.”

Dave went on to say that he is very happy to have reached an agreement with Ace to reopen the academy, and invited all Randfontein’s young people in the U/14, U/19 and U/21 age groups to join them at Greenhills Stadium between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Monday until Thursday.

“We will be catering for children of different backgrounds and each player will get individual attention. We will not only teach them basic soccer skills – we’ll teach them social skills such as discipline, patience, determination, and teamwork as well.
