Hartzstraat Primary School honours its best athlete

Several prizes and gifts were awarded to other athletes from the school who had participated in the Sasa event.

The Hartzstraat Primary School was proud to honour its Grade 7 learner, Afrikah Diago, for putting the school on the map after he made it to the third place among all the national schools that were competing in the South African Schools Athletics (Sasa) on Saturday 17 March in Cape Town.

Principal Shadean Butler with Afrikah and his parents Luciah and Jassman Diago, who were also part of the ceremony.

During the special ceremony held at the school on Friday 23 March, the principal, Shadean Butler said: “We are a school that goes for total quality in education as well as in sports. What we are witnessing here today is really a milestone and we are very proud of Afrikah.

“He is a very humble boy who comes from a disadvantaged home and the school is taking a pledge to support him all the way to his success.

“We want him to go to a sports-oriented school on a bursary, where we believe he will excel.”

Commenting on the prizes that were handed over during the ceremony to the young athlete, Butler said:

“In order for him to further his career, we have donated spiked running shoes to him. We have also awarded him with a trophy in recognition of his achievement of a national third place. He is the third fastest boy in the U/12 category, across the country.

He said a number of educational items were also offered to Afrikah to stimulate his academic performance.

“We have also made an effort to encourage other athletes in the school to train harder and also achieve what Afrikah has achieved.”

Principal Butler said the school was thrilled to hear that there are several local high schools rooting for Afrikah and willing to form part of his career process.

“We will be negotiating on his behalf to get a sports bursary, so that he will not have to pay any school fees.”
