What not to miss in sport this weekend

Some must-see live sporting events on television this weekend!

Who says there’s nothing going on in the sporting world in the first week of the new year?

The Herald has compiled some must-see sporting events on television taking place from today (Saturday, 6 January) until Sunday, 7 January.

SATURDAY, 6 JANUARY

Motor sport:

• Dakar 2018 starts today with the motor-sport world focused on Peru and the start in Lima, where most competitors are doing their final preparations before blast-off and two weeks of epic racing. But will the race overcome its 2017 troubles? Last year proved a highly controversial Dakar blighted by what can only be termed a navigational nightmare, although it appears that the organisers are better prepared this year …

Rugby:

• Round 13 of the Guiness Pro14 will see South African-based Cheetahs take on Benetton in Italy. Kick-off is at 3.10pm.

Cricket:

• Don’t miss two mouthwatering cricket clashes, the first between Australia and England on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test of the Ashes (from 1.20am) or the second day of the first test between South Africa and India from 10am. Play will then continue on Sunday, also from 10am.

Football:

• South African sides will go head-to-head as the ABSA Premiership continues. Matches not to miss include SuperSport United vs Kaizer Chiefs (from 5.30pm) and Orlando Pirates against Baroka FC from 8pm.

SUNDAY, 7 JANUARY

Football:

• Barcelona and Real Madrid fans can catch their teams in action against Levante (5.10pm) and Celta Vigo (9.40pm) respectively.
