Siphiwe – a potential new Springbok on the block?

A young rugby player from Mohlakeng wants to follow in the footsteps of Siya Kolisi and represent the Boks.

Siphiwe Mazibuko, a rugby player for the West Rand Lynx Club in Roodepoort, wants to become a Springbok.

His idol is the well-known Siya Kolisi, Springbok/ Western Province and Stormers loose forward, although Siphiwe himself plays as outside centre.

Siphiwe recently took part in a British tour with the SA Country District U/19 team that took on youth teams from Scotland and England. According to him, they beat Glasgow University (106–5), Newcastle University (36–18) and Sedgley Tigers (33–20).

Siphiwe is currently a student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) where he is also a rugby player. He said he first found his ‘rugby feet’ at Avante Primary School. In 2012, he received the Player of the Year Award.

He told the Herald that he sees rugby as a sport for everyone and that even youngsters from the townships and rural areas, irrespective of their race, can become rugby players, but that merit and performance must be emphasised.

“I would advise the kids in Mohlakeng and other townships to pursue whatever they have a passion for,” he said.

Although his ultimate goal is to wear the green and gold, he is also looking at plying his trade overseas. According to Siphiwe, the Sedgley Tigers seemed especially interested in his services.
