Students at the Randgate Harmony Dojang Club received medals and held the town’s name high at the Combat Tang Soo Do (CTSD) South African Championships held at Wits University recently.

Approximately 137 competitors took part in the SA Championships, and 161 competitors took part in the Selection Championships. The next selection tournament will be held in October.

These selections are for the National President’s Development Team, which will appear in April 2018.

After that, the selected students will go to London to represent South Africa among the best Haedong Kumdo and Tang Soo Do countries.

Master Godfrey Jacobsen, 41, has been involved in this sport for 34 years.  The Randgate Harmony Dojang Club has been going for the last five years and is said to be growing day by day.

Francois Prinsloo, Jason Fitford and Duncan Jonker.

This unique sport has two sections, namely Haedong Kumdo, a Korean martial art, practised using one or two swords. It is inspired by ancient and modern Korean fighting styles.  The Combat Tang Soo Do is the other style.

The categories in the competitions are sparring, forms and paper cutting. Martin Prinsloo, Master and coach, said there are three types of swords used in this sport, namely an aluminium sword, a Bokken sword and a rubber sword. This sport is everything but dangerous as they do not use dangerous swords.

Most importantly, this sport teaches one discipline, self-control, fitness, helps you to focus, and in the times we live in, self-defence.

Young and old are welcome to join this sport. For more information, please contact Master Godfrey Jacobsen on 083 301 9648.
