Kickboxers fight their way to the top

Two gold, one silver and a bronze for Mile High Kickboxing and Shidokan Club at Great North 2 kickboxing tournament.

The Mile High Kickboxing and Shidokan Club has set the kickboxing ring on fire this season.

The club had three participants in the Great North 2 kickboxing tournament that took place on 28 August at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre.

The tournament is open for all amateur South African Kickboxing Association (Saka) affiliated fighters in the styles of semi-contact, light contact, full contact, K1 and forms. Fighters come from all over southern Africa in quest to win gold.

Jo-ane Barnard participated in the semi- and light-contact divisions and managed to secure two gold medals. Semi-contact kickboxers try to score points by successfully landing strikes to their opponents whilst maintaining clean, controlled form. Each strike must be made with light contact only. Each time a strike is successfully landed, the fight is interrupted and opponents are reset to their staring positions. Referees assess and score the strike accordingly.

Light-contact kickboxing opponents fight for a number of rounds and try to score points by landing clean and controlled strikes. If fighters are deemed to be fighting too hard, they will be given a warning by the referee, otherwise the fight is continuous and is only interrupted if a foul is committed.

Another participant, Jannie Barnard, obtained a silver medal in the semi-contact fight while Juan Carstens managed a bronze medal in light contact.

Jannie will now fight in the Glory Kickboxing Tournament on 22 September to qualify to be on the international Glory rankings.
