Mohlakeng 4 Stars win tourney via penalty shootout

It was locals Mohlakeng 4 Stars who were crowned champs of the inaugural Thembi Kgatlhana Soccer Tournament beating Mapetla Stars 6-2 in a penalty shootout.

Mohlakeng 4 Stars beat Mapetla Stars 6–2 in a penalty shootout during the dramatic final of the inaugural Thembi Kgatlhana Soccer Tournament held at the Patrick ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng recently.

Just 17 seconds into the first half – said to be one of the fastest goals in the tournament – Thabang ‘Shiela’ Ramaphoka put his team, Mapetla Stars, in front.

With the teams locked in a one-all draw, the game went to a penalty shootout.

Mohlakeng 4 Stars then drew level with a breathtaking goal from Karabo ‘Stich’ Tshepe who sent a cracker of a shot past Mapetla Stars’ goalkeeper, leaving him no chance to defend his goal.

With the teams locked in a one-all draw, the game went to a penalty shootout. The hero and man to step up was Mohlakeng 4 Stars goalkeeper, Chuku Sithole, who gave the opponents little by letting through just two goals.

“We made silly and common errors in the first half so we had to close them down as fast as possible in the second half,” said winning captain, Tsantsa Moloto.

With the teams locked in a one-all draw, the game went to a penalty shootout.

“Despite lack of sponsors, trophies and medals, the games were overall a success. I am, however, disappointed by local businesses and the municipality whom I approached a long time ago, but no one came to our aid,” said Thembi Kgatlhana, Banyana Banyana player who represented South Africa at the Rio Olympic Games last year, and organiser of the event.
