The team managed to win three games on their first day.

Randfontein Rugby Club’s 7s team featured in the Mufulira 7’s Rugby Festival in Zambia last weekend.

The festival took place from 5 to 6 August and is considered an international tournament in which 32 teams, among them the Lions 7s, the Western Province 7s, a 7s team from Australia and one from New Zealand took part. The Mufulira Leopards were the hosts.

According to the team manager, Jannie van Logerenberg, the team played out in the Shield Final.

“The tournament consisted of four finals, namely, Cup Final, Shield Final, Bowl Final and the Plate Final. After the quarterfinals the teams play in the Cup semifinals. After that, the team that lost goes through to the Shield Final,” said Jannie.

Two players, Rudi Marx and Dean Krynauw, were selected for the Dream Team, which managed to win three games on their first day. The fourth game was a draw.

“We lost against the Lions 33–19 on our second day,” said Jannie.

During the tournament the team received an award for the team with the best spirit, discipline and innovation. Manager Jannie told the Herald that the team had a very enriching practice session with the Mufulira Youth Club where the players helped the passionate young players with skill practice.

“It was an absolute privilege and experience to be in Zambia,” said Jannie.

The team wants to thank Chris Vermeulen as well as Lou de Klerk from Mopani Copper Mine for the invitation and their hospitality.
