VIDEO: Local female boxer hits stardom

WATCH: Amorie Gonsalves is making strides in the boxing world.

The girl who made boxing history will soon be exchanging fists with the world’s best in the Commonwealth Games, but for now she’s soaking up her new-found celebrity status.

Amorie Gonsalves will be the first female boxer to represent South Africa in the Commonwealth Games and was recently on national television to tell her story with her dad and coach, Willie, by her side.

She recently had an interview with Thomas Mlambo, host of Sport at 10 on SABC 1 where she explained what got her into boxing and why she’s so good.

The young boxer said boxing is in her blood and because of that, taking blows and giving them is not something she’s scared of. Willie backed this and explained how much female boxing has developed in South Africa.

Both he and Amorie believe she has what it takes to win a gold in her weight category and qualify for the World Boxing Championships. During her interview, Amorie and Thomas decided on a ring name for Amorie – Pac Woman – after her favourite boxer, Manny Pacquiao.

The Gonsalves family are still trying to raise funds and gather sponsors for her mother and father/ coach, Willie, to travel with her. They will be hosting a golf day in aid of this at the Leeuwkop Golf Club near Kyalami on Tuesday, 20 June.

For more information about the golf day, contact Willie on 083 235 2271.
