R’fontein team dethroned at Easter tourney

A team from Soweto stunned the defending champs from Randfontein at this year's Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament.

It was team Villa Masello from Naledi, Soweto who were crowned champs at this year’s Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament held at the Patrick ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng.

Their 3–1 victory in the final knocked Mohlakeng Four Stars, the 2016 defending champs, off their throne.

With just sixteen minutes of the game elapsed, Ayanda Lubelo put his name on the score sheet, to register a 1–0 lead for the visitors. The home team then equalised shortly before half time, thanks to local hero and ever hard-working Karabo “Stich” Tshepe, to make it 1–1.

His efforts were, however, not enough at the end of the day, even with the presence of Mzi Khumalo, the Rand West City Executive Mayor in the VIP stands.

In the second half, the Soweto outfit showed their clear intent when captain Tumelo Mogale netted the second goal, and there was complete silence in the packed stadium. Ayanda Lubelo then put matters beyond doubt by scoring his side’s third goal. That final nail in the Randfontein team’s coffin saw to it that Villa Maselo left the tournament with the R50 000 prize money.
