It was women only at the Randfontein Bowling Club (RBC) when they hosted the annual District Women’s Tournament.
Once a year, women from bowling clubs all over the West Rand and Johannesburg West come together to play in a women’s only tournament that gives them time to celebrate each other in the sport.
The tournament was held on Wednesday, 19 April at RBC and the club hosted it in style. They prepared beautiful tables for the players and made sure to thank every player for participating with a gift.
The tournament had players of different skill levels – from those who play bowls in their spare time to Springbok players. A big name in the bowling world, Tracey Smith, who is blind, participated in the tournament which made for an interesting game for the women she was up against.
In 2015, Tracey represented South Africa in New Zealand where she won a gold medal in the B1 (completely blind) category. In 2016, she participated in the South African National Disability Bowls Championship and won the gold in the women’s singles and silver in the mixed pairs. Winning the gold at the championship, brought her tally of gold medals to 14.
The tournament was not only about women in sports but also women looking after their health. Cansa aptly had a breast cancer stand at the event and encouraged players to schedule pap smears and breast examinations as well as to donate to the cause to help women affected by cancer.
Vera Pretorius, president of RBC, said it was no easy feat to get the green ready in time for the tournament and decorate the venue. However, she said the committee pulled through and were happy to host yet another successful tournament.
