Family man, businessman, sportsman

The Herald chatted to Paul Holder, who lives in the USA, is a proud Randfonteiner, a hardcore businessman and an on-the-go sportsman.

Fifty-year-old Paul Holder is a man who wears many hats.

Built like a battle tank and hard as nails, Paul fulfills many roles. He is a family man and protector, a local and now global businessman, as well as an avid sportsman, specifically practicing judo and wrestling. Judo is categorised as a modern martial art, which later evolved into a combat and Olympic sport.

Paul Holder.

Paul currently lives in New Jersey in the United States, but has a business as well as properties in Randfontein. He is well known for his business, Q-Bond Glue. Some years ago, he decided to take his business overseas, along with his family. It was during a recent visit to his home town that the Herald caught up with him.

It was clear Paul has a passion and talent for judo – he started training when he was just eight years old and is still going strong.

Paul won third place in his division at the World Veteran Judo Championships and is a 4th degree (or 4th dan) black belt. He says he practices in New Jersey in the US. Paul has trained all over the world and was also the proud coach of the South African National Youth Cadet Judo team between 2014 and 2015. He is currently also involved with the Golden Score Judo Club, with dojos in Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Roodepoort.

Any Randfonteiner keen to start judo can contact Sensei Michelle van Wezel on 083 312 4312.

“I do fitness and practise for seven to eight hours a week. I also follow a healthy diet,” said Paul. His favourite quote is ‘Seize the day’. He said judo teaches you discipline and focus. Kosei Inoue, a judo practitioner from Japan, is his inspiration.

More than anything, however, Paul is a dedicated family man.
