Celebs cycle in support of others in 947 Cycle Challenge

The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge, now in its 20th year – with a new headline sponsor, will again put charity causes at the forefront of the event.

Over the last five years, the Cycle Challenge has encouraged cyclists to “Ride for a Purpose”, which gives everyone the opportunity to support a cause or charity that may be meaningful to them. During that time, the race has helped charities raise over R50 million through this initiative.

This year, a number of celeb cyclists will take on the Cycle Challenge for causes close to their hearts.

947’s Producer Brad from the Breakfast Xpress Show will be cycling in support of the Choc Cows, who raise funds for children with cancer. Dali and Rachel Tambo will also cycle in support of the Choc Cows.

Some of SA’s prominent personalities that will also ride in support of their causes this year include: Joel Stransky, the former Springbok will be cycling in support of LumoHawks – which supports the educational needs, and at times the sporting needs too, of previously disadvantaged children and their communities in South Africa; Edwin Cameron, a senior judge will be riding in support of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Paediatric Unit; Greg Minnaar, a Mountain Bike Olympian and SAFTA winner, Warren Masemola who will both be cycling in support of the Kidney Beanz.

Other cyclists riding in this year’s Cycle Challenge include: The Gauteng MEC for Health Ms. Qedani Mahlangu; former Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Mpho Parks Tau; explorers, Riaan and Vasti Manser; as well as comedians’ David Levinsohn, Bevan Cullinan and Christopher Forrest.

Darryl Impey will also be riding along with his wife and Louis Meintjie will be riding in the Telkom peloton. Neither will be racing in this event.

Other celebs include: actress and personality, Hlubi Mboya will cycle in support of the Smile Foundation; Fitness instructor, Letshego Moshoeu Zulu will be cycling in support of the Gugu Zulu Foundation; former Springbok captain, Victor Matfield will cycle in support of Els for Autism; SA artist, Angus Taylorwill cycle in support of The Click Foundation; musician, Paul Ditchfield will cycle in support of San Salvador; and actress, Charlene Brouwer will cycle in support of The Teddy Bear Clinic.

The Cycle Challenge is an iconic Joburg event and the second largest mass participation timed cycling event in the world. It allows over 30 000 cyclists the opportunity to take over the streets and explore the city with the peace of mind of full road closure.

The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge takes place on Sunday November 20 at Riversands Commercial Park.
