Big plans for West Rand sport

Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is slowly but surely developing sports in Randfontein and the greater West Rand.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has embarked on a journey to better the standard of sports in the province.

On Saturday, 17 September, the Department visited the Rand West City Local Municipality to hold a conference with local sports coaches. The event was organised by Life Sihlangu from the Department. The conference explained the current structures of the various sports academies across Gauteng, pointing out that coaching is the key to success for both players and coaches.

A great deal of emphasis was put on coaching and ensuring that coaches in the province are qualified. While the coaches thought at first that this was an expensive process that requires a university degree, they were happy to hear that an equivalent to a degree can be attained through a points system and various accredited workshops and courses. The conference itself acted as one such workshop that already set the ball rolling for the coaches.

In addition to the theoretical side of sports coaching, a practical session was held, to equip coaches with the knowledge to train their players to better themselves and to compete.

The Department is slowly but surely developing sports in Randfontein and the greater West Rand as they recently pumped funds into the area’s boxing clubs. A new West Rand Club was established and it seems the Department is planning big things for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2022 Durban Commonwealth Games.
