Municipal workers show their skills

West Rand District Municipality's staff loosened their ties and got their training kit on to practice for the upcoming South African Local Government Association (SALGA) OR Tambo Inter-municipal Games.

The skills of municipal workers and officials at the West Rand District Municipality were put to the test on Wednesday, 14 September.

At about 3pm, district staff loosened their ties and got their training kit on to practise for the 10th annual South African Local Government Association (SALGA) OR Tambo Inter-municipal Games. This year, the games will be held at the Ekurhuleni Municipality on 21 October. The closing will take place on the same day, at the Germiston Lake.

The games played range from volleyball to table tennis, and every Wednesday staff break a sweat competing against each other in the various sporting codes.

The Herald visited one of the training sessions and saw staff of all ages and skill levels move to their various sports codes. For some, the games are exactly that – a game – but for others, losing is not an option.

According to Kamohelo Tsotetsi, the West Rand District communication officer, the games commemorate the legacy of Oliver Tambo and promote a healthy lifestyle among the municipal workers of Gauteng.

Last year, the former Westonaria Local Municipality showed what they were made of and took home the gold in women’s soccer, while the men’s soccer team took bronze, and the women’s walking race team took silver.
