Ripped to the core

One of the world’s greatest bodybuilders of all time, Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “It’s simple, if it jiggles, it’s fat”.

Subsequently, one Randfontein bodybuilder got his body fat percentage down to four per cent by training like a machine and eating nothing other than muscle fuel to participate in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) South African Championships.

Terence Byrne, a local bodybuilder and Randfontein Cricket Club (RCC) first-team player secured himself a place in the top 10 at the SA Championships after coming fifth in the under 179cm 86kg-division.

The competition took place at the Roodepoort Theatre on Sunday, 4 September. This year is Terence’s first year of competitive bodybuilding but he has been training for 13 years.

He used to play rugby but after a career-damaging knee injury he had to give up the sport but kept training to keep fit. He said he went on a meal plan and once he saw results, he was hooked.

Terence said he owes his success to his current gym, Muscle and Fitness Academy as well as his trainers; Princess Susan from Aroeka and Morné van der Berg.

“The competition was tough. The first two guys were in a league of their own. All you can be is humble because they deserved to win. What I took away from the competition is that I learnt a lot,” he said.

Terence now has his sights set on the Arnold Classic next year. He will spend the time before the competition to move up a weight class.

“I want to move up to about 90 to 95kgs,” he explained.
