Horse riders trotting to the top

Two Randfontein riders held the town's name high.

Randfontein has once again proved it can hold its own – even in horse riding.

Two young Randfonteiners were among the youngsters of the West Rand who recently participated in the second round of the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) competition, which was held at the Misty Meadows Equestrian Centre outside Pretoria.

Kyra Cronje and Mischka Rothman are Randfontein-based riders from the Western Riding Academy.

The Western Riding Academy is situated in the Cradle of Humankind and has been in existence for more than 10 years. The academy trains children as young as three, as well as adults in their golden years in horsemanship, reining, trail, dressage, and Western pleasure. It is home to 36 special horses, some of which are used in counselling sessions.

“Our riders from primary to high school, including Kyra and Mischka who have worked hard with their equine partners, are doing extremely well this year in the SANESA competitions.

These shows offer children from Gauteng the opportunity to compete on different skill levels in horse shows. The two girls participated under their primary school banner. We loved instructing our young and upcoming riders. They really excelled,” said Yolanda Steyn, owner, trainer and instructor at the academy.

Mischka rode in the Level 2 pleasure, horsemanship and reining classes on her horse, Maximillion. She unfortunately did not place in the top three, but placed well among her competitors.

Kyra won the reining class for both the third and fourth qualifiers on her pony, Sylvestor. She also took the first place rosette for horsemanship.

After the competition, five riders from the academy were chosen to compete in the nationals that will be held during the first week of October. They are: Kyra Cronje riding Sylvestor; Liane Brits riding Stetson Blue; Keila Schutte-Hanekom riding Mountneys Kiss Me; Dane Steyn riding Doney Dash and Amigo and Malanda Steyn riding Casanova.
