Riebeeck pupil going places in netball

Local pupil part of winning team at major Spar National Netball Championships in Durban.

The West Rand Spar Girls Netball team competed against some of the strongest provincial teams South Africa has to offer during the Spar National Netball Championships held early in August in Durban.

Gauteng entered no less than four teams in the competition. The groups consisted of Senior A1, A2 and B teams as well as U/21A and B teams. The Senior A team achieved a third place in the championships while the U/21B team finished in the overall first position. Players that finished third each received a bronze medal, and the winners got gold.

Among the ranks of the U/21 team was a 17-year-old Grade 11 pupil from Hoërskool Riebeeckrand, Twanette Thoms.

According to Twanette the championship matches were tough and the scores were sometimes nail-bitingly close.

“In the final game, the referee had to call a time-out to speak to both teams’ captains about the physical contact occurring on the circuit,” Twane said. “Both teams fought hard to be crowned B-pool winners and we were the lucky ones who were able to celebrate our victory against KwaZulu-Natal.”

The final score was 52-34 in favour of the Gauteng team.

Twanette now wishes to take her netball career to the next level. She dreams of one day becoming a Protea player. She is a member of the Greenhills Netball Club and plays in the Hoërskool Riebeeckrand first team.
