Run safely on the town’s streets

With a growing focus on healthy living, many people take up some form of exercise like running.

If you would like to take up running, but the only thing holding you back is the dangers on Randfontein’s roads, stress no more!

Although one would prefer using the gym, there are a few complications involved such as the cost and the availability of such a facility nearby.

An alternative method, however, would be to take up road running. This exercise stimulates the body and mind if done right.

Christo Schoeman, Comrades Marathon runner and member of the Randmark Cycle, Walk and Running Club provided some tips for safe running.

“All you need is a decent pair of running shoes and the open road,” he said.

• Always wear visible and reflective clothing, especially when running in the dark.

• Do not use earphones when running.

• Always run facing traffic. This enables you to see other road users and they will be able to see you.

• It is very important to have with you any form of identification and a cheap cellphone if possible.

• It is crucial for any runner, especially women to carry some form of self-protection with them. Most pepper-spray canisters and whistles are small and easy to carry.

• It is strongly advisable to run with a partner as opposed to running alone, which makes you an easy target.

• Leave your valuables at home to prevent being a target.

• Always tell someone when you are going for a run and try to give your route.

• Obey the rules of the road at all times.

• Respect other road users and they will respect you. Always be friendly and accommodating.

“The main rule is to always trust your instincts. Be alert and above all, enjoy your run!” Christo said.
