Sports trumps crime, police say

Police to youth: Stay away from crime and rather participate in sport.

The West Rand Cluster Police reached out to 300 young people during its Sports Against Crime event.

The event was hosted in Mohlakeng the day before Youth Day, by the West Rand Cluster Women’s Network in partnership with Men for Change.

“Most of the spectators were dressed in school uniform to pay homage to the youth of 1976,” said Constable Lucky Matome, the Tarlton Police spokesperson.

Sporting codes represented at the event included soccer and netball, with five netball teams and seven soccer teams taking part. Many of the players in both sporting codes were unemployed youth. The event was used to inspire the young people of the West Rand.

Mohlakeng XI walked away as winners of the soccer section and Brothers Club A were crowned the netball winners.

The Mogale City Local Municipality and the West Rand District Municipality sponsored trophies as well as a kit for the winning teams as part of their Ntirhisano Project.

Randfontein Station Commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela encouraged the youth at the event to stay away from crime and to rather participate in sport.
