Mapogo Teine edge Wits at ‘House of Pain’

The score remained 19-21 until the last 30 seconds of the game when fans were at the edge of their seats.

Mapogo Teine had to dig deep to secure a 22-21 win against favorites University of Witwatersrand (Wits) on Teine’s home ground dubbed the ‘House of Pain’ over the weekend.

Teine fought hard – like soldiers in the First World War – against Wits for a narrow one point victory against the boys in blue. One point might not seem like much of a win but Teine deserved the win after a tight match with their university counterparts. Wits started scoring early in the game leaving Teine hanging their heads after a terrible match start.

Teine slowly but surely started coming back after a series of penalty kicks to the poles. Even with making every kick they were awarded, Teine was still down by a number of points when finally a try was scored by Kosie van Zyl. This brought the score to a not-so-comfortable 16-14 lead over Wits.

Just went Teine thought they could hold on to the two point lead, Wits scored a tri against them moments after Kosie made his way over their back line taking the score to 16-21. Teine was then awarded yet another penalty of which Tiaan Nel, Mapogo Teine’s fly-half secured three points for Teine taking the score to 19-21.

The score remained 19-21 until the last 30 seconds of the game when fans were at the edge of their seats.

Teine like the Stormers against any team played a full 80 minutes of rugby against Wits and kicked the ball over the poles bringing the score to 22-21 and taking them to a one point lead over Wits in the last few seconds of the match. Wits may have started the match but Teine certainly finished it.

Tiaan took and made every kick in the match, Kosie scored Teine’s only tri of the match, and Mapogo Teine captain Rudi Marx was named man of the match.

The Randfontein Rugby Club’s other teams fought hard against the boys in blue but weren’t as successful as their first team. The Eagles (second team) lost by one point scoring 25 to Wits’ 26 points. The third team beat Wits with a 15 point lead scoring 15 to 0. The under 21s took a hard knock and lost 43 to 0 and the under 19s lost 12 to 22.

The Randfontein Rugby Club has a lineup of matches over the next two weeks on their home grounds. On Friday (13 May) they will be going head to head with the University of Potchefstroom and on Friday (20 May) they will be battling it out with Pirates Rugby Club.

Ian Pottas won the game in his head before he even walked onto the field. Behind him is Cayle Denner, ready for Wits.
