‘Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’

Randgate Boxing Club take four first places and one trophy at home ground boxing tourney.

Fists went flying at Randgate Boxing Club’s development tournament held over the weekend.

The tournament took place on Saturday, 16 April and drew crowds from all over Gauteng.

Medics who gave their services – including Quick Response Services (QRS) who sponsored the tournament two medics – took 206 weights and measured 206 blood pressures before spending the day treating bloody noses and gashed heads. The medics were selflessly there for the 52 fights in case anything went wrong.

The club’s boxing hall was already filled to capacity before fights even started. The crowd was drawn to the club’s kitchen which served everything needed to keep boxers sustained throughout the tournament including head coach Willie Gonsalves’ Indian curry.

Fights kicked off with female boxers who put on a fine show. One of the first fights, a first-time fighter from Kempton Park went in the ring with one of Hillbrow’s more experienced. After the fight the Kempton boxer didn’t despair, she told the Herald she now knows what to work on during training.

Tiny boxers took to the ring with massive gloves and head protection and showed what they’ve learned so far at their clubs. Once the little ones were out of the way, the bigger boxers and elite men took center stage.

The match to watch was definitely Harry Joubert from the Randgate Boxing Club who delivered a solid boxing match to the crowd and in Muhammad Ali’s words, he floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee. His fight had a textbook execution; his opponent had no chance to get punches in and those he managed to get in were just part of Joubert’s plan to counter them with even stronger punches.

The fight unlike the others at the tournament showed what boxing is about; basics and combinations. Joubert is known as the fastest boxer at his club and lived up to the name even when delivering powerful body blows to his opponent. At the end of the tournament and as expected, Joubert got the trophy for best boxer of the tournament out of the 102 fighters who boxed.

In total the club had seven fights of which four boxers won.
