Rem athlete sixth in SA

Rem's golden athlete represents the school at the SA Athletics Championships.

An athlete from Randfontein Primary School (Rem) held his school’s name high when he placed sixth in the country in the high jump event.

Michel Banacini, in Grade 7, has gone from strength to strength during this year’s athletics season.

At the Gauteng West Athletics Championships he took gold in the U/13 high jump event. His gold took him through to the Gauteng Athletics Championships, where he once again took gold in the same category, this time doing a 1,62 metre jump.

At the South African Athletics Championships he did not place in the top three, but placed six in the country. He nevertheless was the only athlete from his school at the prestigious event.

Michel’s younger brother, Joel, in Grade 4 also at Rem, also excelled in athletics, specifically long jump.

He took silver at the Gauteng West Championships, finishing in 12th place.

Joel Banacini (top 12 in Gauteng), Michel Banacini (top six in South Africa) and Mikhile Hendricks (top 30 in Gauteng).
