49 days to go to the 2016 Comrades Marathon

It is the final countdown!

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced that there are just 49 days left till the 91st Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 29 May 2016.

CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “The official route distance is 89,208km with the race starting outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 5.30am and ending 12 hours later at Durban’s Sahara-Kingsmead Cricket Stadium.

“I would like to urge our runners to submit their club and licence details as well as their qualifying times to the CMA in order to ensure that they meet all of the entry requirements.

The closing date for the submission of these details is 2 May 2016.”

Preceding race day will be the three day Bonitas Comrades Expo running from Thursday, 26 May till Saturday, 28 May 2016 at the Durban Exhibition Centre. The Expo is the largest and the longest running expo of its kind in the country and offers everything regarding health and fitness and is entertaining, educational and informative.

Over 110 brands were showcased at last year’s Expo, including the latest in running apparel, shoes, accessories, fitness equipment and allied products with the number of visitors growing to over 50 000 over the past few years.

Among the celebrity runners participating in this year’s down-run will be Colleen de Reuck – SA Marathon record holder and 4 time Olympian; Mpho Molefe – Ukhozi FM DJ; Kwena Moabelo – TV personality; Koula Budler – ex-5FM DJ; Helman Mkalele – member of the Bafana Bafana 1996 Afcon winning team; Jonathan Kaplan – Rugby World Cup referee; Anzel Stofberg – Top 5 finalist in Miss SA 2014 and David Vlok – actor in the TV series Egoli.

The face of the 2016 Comrades Marathon campaign, Izokuthoba – It Will Humble You, Joseph Giyani will be attempting his third Comrades finish this year. Last year’s Old Mutual Spirit of Comrades recipient and visually impaired runner, Richard Malose Monisi will also be part of the race, aiming for his twelfth Comrades medal.

CMA General Manager, Chris Fisher says, “Team Comrades is hard at work to ensure that the 91st Comrades Marathon is an epic experience for our runners and supporters. We invite the nation to be a part of this great race. It will humble you!”
