SA indoor hockey climb world rankings

SA indoor hockey teams move up the ranks in 2015 World Cup.

The South African field hockey men and women may not have secured a spot in the 2016 Olympics but the SA indoor hockey teams did better than they ever had in the Indoor Hockey World Cup (IHWC).

The 2015 IHWC was held in Leipzig Arena, Germany. The SA indoor women, who were previously world number 18 moved up nine places in their final match against Canada. Their full-time score against the Canadians was 4-2.

Kara Stella and Eloise Walters products of Pietermaritzburg Girls High School, were the two goal scorers who managed the four goals. Interestingly enough, the entire SA indoor women’s team was made up on players from Kwazulu-Natal.

The SA men’s indoor team also moved up a few ranks in the world and are now ranked at number 10. They, too, took Canada on and beat them in a one point lead. The full time score was 2-1.

Craig Haley, PMB Varistiy product and Old Hiltonian’s Matt Fairweather scored the two goals against the Canadians.

KZN seems to have a passion for indoor hockey as all but one player are in some way from the area.

The winners of the indoor world cup for 2015 were the Netherlands. The indoor women cleaned up just about as much as their sister field team in the 2014 world cup which they hosted.

Their match ended in one-on-ones. The full time score was one 1-1 against Germany and the shoot out score was 1-0 to Holland.

The men eased into the top position beating Austria 3-2.
