Stands were filled with soccer fans while others showcased their skill on the field at this year’s Easter Soccer Tournament held in Mohlakeng recently.
Veins sprung from the necks of fans supporting their teams while players fought like titans to score goals. The coaches jumped up at every shot taken at a goal and when a goal was scored, they leaped for joy and threw their hats in the air or to the ground in frustration.
The final came and it was Munsieville United versus BUGP from Tarlton for the top honours. Players fought to score goals but both teams found it difficult to make a difference on the scoreboard. Munsieville United dominated ball possession in the second half but could not set up a finisher. More minutes were added to the clock to decide a winner.
The final was so tight the teams couldn’t score and as a result, the match went into penalties of which Munsieville United came out tops.
The event was organised by the Randfontein Local Municipality and the Randfontein Local Football Association.
Randfontein Executive Mayor Mzi Khumalo, West Rand Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa, Randfontein Local Municipality Speaker Brenda Mahuma, and MMC Local Economic Development councillor L Matshuisa attended the event.
A special acknowledgement was given by Khumalo who congratulated the South African Sports Star of the year, Portia Modise whose team (Black Stars) also was competing in the tournament. Modise was acknowledged for scoring 100 international goals while playing for Banyana Banyana (South Africa’s women national football team).
