Mohlakeng inspired by Protea Fire

'I want to see one of my players make it to a provincial team or even the national squad'

Tumi Mpaga, 25, is a Mohlakeng resident who is passionate for the game of cricket.

When he isn’t coaching and captaining the Mohlakeng cricket team – a first ever in the community – he is playing for the Randfontein Saturday 1, 7 or 9 sides.

“I want to show people that Mohlakeng also has the Protea Fire burning in them. I also want to get as many kids and people off the streets and drugs by giving them something fun and healthy to occupy their time with,” Tumi said.

The herald was invited to one of the team’s practice sessions which took place on Thursday (9 April) at the AB Phokombe High School tennis courts in Mohlakeng. Their enthusiasm and passion for the game filled the air and their will to play was evident.

“I want to play for the Proteas one day. I really look up to Quintin de Kock and hope to follow in his footsteps,” said Thabang Mpaga, 15, from Phahama Secondary School.

The team has to practice on a tennis court with old equipment that Tumi managed to gather. “We have been practicing for more than a year now but it is difficult sometimes. Most times we only have one ball and if a batsman gets a decent shot in and the ball clears the fence, we have to hope and pray we can find it again,” explained Tumi.

The team wants to be able to play matches soon but without the right gear it won’t be able to happen. The team needs bats, pads, balls, helmets, safe guards, knee guards and a first aid kit. They also need a descent place to practice in Mohlakeng.

“I want to see one of my players make it to a provincial team or even the national squad,” said Tumi confidently.

If you want to join the guys for practice or join the team you can find them at the school Monday to Thursday from 4 to 6pm. For more information or if you want to donate kit you can contact Tumi on 078 878 3344 or email him on mrcricket947@gmail.com
