Soccer to overcome drugs

‘We wanted to revive the spirit of soccer for a good cause – overcoming drug abuse’

A community five-a-side soccer tournament was held in Middelvlei over the Easter weekend for a good cause.

Organiser Nomathele Bongq said, “We organised this tournament because we wanted to revive the spirit of soccer for a good cause – overcoming drug abuse.

“This time of year people also get together, drink and get up to no good, so why not get these people to rather play soccer?”

During the tournament young men of the Middelvlei community played five-a-side soccer on a sand field, which ward councillor Xolisa Ntsepo helped to organise.

Music played loudly and the community was free to have a seat and enjoy the matches. Dust was everywhere as sliding tackles were made and goals were scored. There was laughing on the field as well as the odd stare-down from two opposing players.

Organisers did well in that players had no time to occupy themselves with anything other than soccer.
