Drag racing season is here

Action starts at 8.30am this weekend at Tarlton.

The 2015 drag racing season will kick off at Tarlton International Raceway on the West Rand this coming Sunday, 8 February.

According to Nico van Heerden from SA Racing Promotions “The ear splitting Top Eliminator challengers comprising of Nico van Rensburg and Werner Conradie’s Top Alcohol Funny cars, along with Dalmain Hattingh and Deon Swanepoel’s awesome Dragsters, reach speeds in excess of 340kph over the quarter mile. That equates to 0-100kph in around 1.1 seconds so don’t blink.

“Then of course there are the fastest radical altereds in the country which are to be found in the Senior Eliminator category. These are followed by the Super Competition Eliminator category which consists of a pasture of very impressive altered and pro-street cars that comfortably post times of anything between 8.20 and 11.20 seconds.

“Not to be outdone, massive altered and pro-street dogfights will be taking place throughout the season in Competition Eliminator.

“In addition a wide field of cheeky Super Street and Modified Street cars will be competing along with a range of the most stunning street and superbikes on show.

“During the lunch break, Tarlton’s J34 Westinghouse Jet Dragster piloted by Nico van Rensburg will light up its afterburner and amid the eerie whine of a ‘Banshee” engine, the fire breather will blast its way down the strip in an explosive pageant of flame.”

The gates will open at 7am and racing should commence around 8.30am. There is plenty of parking available along with take-away food and refreshments from their restaurants and bars. Should rain call the show, it will be re-scheduled for 15 February.

Tickets are R80 per person and R50 for kids (6 to 12 years of age).
