Randmark pays respect to late friend

Randmark Athletics Club takes a moment to remember a lost life before tackling the Coronation DC.

Randmark Athletics Club recently participated in the 22nd Coronation Double Century cycle racein Swellendam in the Western Cape for friend and glory.

It was the fifth year that the club has sent a team down to participate.

Before the grueling race, the team paid their respects to the late Barend van Staden who was involved in an accident during the 2013 Coronation Double Century race. He passed away from his injuries in the accident on 27 December 2013.

According to Jan Kotze, one of the cyclists who participated in the race, “We started in a very misty Swellendam just after 6am but before we hit Tradouw Pass, the mist had cleared and we had perfect weather all the way.”

One team member suffered a number of flats along the route and an additional two members were involved in an accident when they crossed the railway lines, one of them could not finish the race due to injury.

Of the 12 cyclists who participated, six went ahead to insure a finish before the cut-off time and completed the race in eight hours and 47 minutes. The Coronation DC is one of the top cycle races on the club’s calendar every year.

“We would like to enter two teams for 2015,” Jan said.
