RCC gives Jo’burg a hiding

Locals victorious by 186 runs and pay tribute to the late Phillip Hughes.

Randfontein Cricket Club’s (RCC) premier side is still celebrating after their emphatic home victory over Johannesburg Cricket Club from this past weekend (Sunday 30 November).

Before the match all the players had a moment of silence for Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes who tragically passed away on Thursday 27 November, two days after a cricket ball hit him behind the ear in a domestic Australian game.

RCC was sent in to bat first with the two openers, Aldo van den Berg and Terence Byrnes getting off to a slow start, losing both their wickets. But the 55 runs scored by Melt Louw got the team back on track followed by Jimmy Reynolds’ 46 runs and Karools Mcalester’s 29 that took Randfontein to a total score of 225 for the loss of nine wickets.

“We would have wanted to score a bit more runs but were restricted on a difficult pitch,” RCC president Leon Maree said.

Johannesburg Cricket Club had it tough from the beginning to end and bowled for just 40 runs. The Randfontein bowlers who stood out during the innings were Chrystian Michalowski who took five wickets for 13 runs in his six overs bowled. He was well supported by Malcolm Faddy who managed to take four wickets for just nine runs in his seven overs.

“I am extremely happy with the outcome of the game today and very proud of the team’s performance throughout the year,” Leon said after the game.
