2015 Dakar Rally: ‘Challenge accepted’

Raffle tickets are flying in support for Team Rhide SA.

Raffle tickets in support of South Africa’s two quad competitors who will be competing in the 2015 Dakar Rally, are selling fast and with only a five days left to the draw of the prizes, companies, friends and supporters have now challenged each other to see who will top the list with the most tickets.

The raffle forms part of Team Rhide SA’s fund raising projects to assist their two members, Brian Baragwanath and Hannes Saaijman, financially in their quest to conquer the Dakar Rally.

The first prize is a brand new Yamaha Ténéré XT660Z adventure motorcycle to the value of R98 000 while the second prize (an easy-loader Diamond Trailers trailer) is valued at R17 900 and the third prize (a three-night stay for four people at Simply Wild Lodges) includes a blesbuck hunt.

In support of the two off-road quad champions, for who their first ever Dakar Rally are an extremely expensive project despite Baragwanath winning his entry by winning the Dakar Challenge earlier this year in Botswana, various companies and individuals across the country are now challenging each other to buy the most tickets.

This will not only boost Team Rhide SA’s funds, but it gives ticket holders an even better chance to win any of the valuable prizes.

At the moment former quad competitor, Danie Senekal and his family’s business (Limpopo Vervoer) from Musina are topping the list followed by another quad competitor, André Park and his brother Bobby, who are also from Musina. Francois van Niekerk is third with Gary Whitehouse, who is well-known in the off-road motorcycle industry as the owner of Dirtbike Fanatics who buys and sell motorcycles, fourth and Paul van Niekerk of PC Transport from Ermelo fifth.

The owner of McGee Yamaha, Garth McGee, shares the fifth place with Van Niekerk after he bought his tickets at the Gauteng Off-road Club’s year-end function where Baragwanath walked away with yet another GOC overall victory in the quad category. Des and Lynne Wentzel from Wenbro Hire in Polokwane supported their ‘local’ rider (Baragwanath is from Polokwane) and are currently sixth.

The draw will take place on Saturday (6 December) at the Roof of Africa prizegiving in Lesotho. Saaijman, who has competed in various enduro motorcycle events this year, will also compete in the upcoming Roof of Africa – yes, with his motorcycles – that will take place from 4 to 6 December in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Both Baragwanath and Saaijman competed in the recent Amageza Rally where they gained more navigational experience over this five day multi-stage race in the Northern and Western Cape.

They participated with their motorcycles. Earlier this year both also completed the Namaqua African Rally in the Western Cape with Baragwanath finishing third overall – he also won the quad category – with Saaijman also finishing the event despite experiencing engine problems halfway through the race.

Tickets for the Team Rhide SA Raffle can be bought via their website (teamrhidesa.com) or at BB Motorsport or EMD Racing in Centurion, Pretoria or via Motorsport SA (information attached). Tickets and Team Rhide SA t-shirts are selling for R250 each. Visit teamrhidesa.com for more information.
