Randfontein Hockey Club wins league

Randfontein is proud of its victorious men's hockey team.

Captain of the Randfontein Hockey Club (RHC) Pieter Liebenberg is proud of his boys after they were crowned winners of the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association (SGHA) 6B league.

Despite his team going up against some big-name teams such as Khoza, Golden Eagles and Mondeor hockey clubs in what was described as a tough season, Liebenberg says, “We still managed to finish on top, notwithstanding the early, cold mornings the team had to face as well as the blood, sweat and tears the team put in”.

In the last match of the league, RHC went up against hosts Morningside Country Club and with home advantage the latter was victorious by one goal. Despite the loss, RHC still was the champion of the league thanks to a better goal difference.

Liebenberg emphasised that without the support from loyal spectators who sat on the side of the field watching every match, it would have been a much steeper mountain to climb. Nevertheless, the team set out to make the Randfontein community proud and has done so.

He also praised all the players, both junior and senior, who were part of the team’s success.

Their aim now is to create awareness of sport in the Randfontein community, specifically hockey. The club faces new challenges in the next season and hopes to start a women’s side in the new year, but they need a coach.
