With the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge fast approaching organisers have announced several temporary road closures come race day.

Now in its 18th year, the Cycle Challenge boasts a new venue and revised route.

On Sunday, 16 November, tens of thousands of cyclists and supporters will converge at the new home of the race being the Century Property’s Riversands Commercial Park in Erling Road situated just beyond Fourways. It will be the start and end of this year’s Cycle Challenge.

The Cycle Challenge starts at 5.30am and temporary road closures will be manned on affected routes throughout the day. As the last cyclists finish on the route the roads are cleared as soon as possible for motorists. The highway will be cleared by approximately 2.30pm and by 5.45pm all roads will be cleaned, cleared and re-opened.

The new route, which will start on a fairly steep incline along Mnandi Road will now approach the finish line with an even more challenging climb up to the King of the Mountains along Cedar Road and then cruise through Steyn City Boulevard, a brand new dual carriage way, before making its way back up to the finish, along Riversands Boulevard in the Riversands property.

To ensure the safety of cyclists and other road users, certain roads will be closed at specific times and motorists will be required to use alternate routes.

Roads to be affected include the M2 East between 4.30am to 2.30pm; M1 South between 4.30am to 2.30pm; R55 between 5am to 12.45am; Summit Road between 5am to 12am; Woodmead between 5.30am to 1pm; Joe Slovo between 5.45am to 2.30pm; Jan Smuts between 6.10am to 3.30pm; Bram Fischer between 6.30am to 3.40pm; Witkoppen between 6.40am to 4.20pm; Malibongwe between 6.45am to 4.50pm and Cedar between 7am to 5.45pm.

For those attending the event, plenty of free parking will be available and GPS coordinates can be found on the 947 App as well as on all the maps available on the website. Authorised and emergency service personnel will also be on hand to help manage traffic flows.

Visit www.cyclechallenge.co.za for all road closures, as well as a detailed route map, and an interactive map with alternative routes. Residents that will be affected by the temporary road closures are urged to familiarise themselves and take note of the times.

“We are always acutely aware of the impact that the race has on our residents and strive to do everything possible to minimise the impact on those who need to move around on Cycle Challenge Sunday,” said Ravi Naidoo, 947 programming manager.

The Cycle Challenge is supported by the City of Johannesburg. Residents are always invited to come out and support the cyclists on the route.
