UJ to host first ever Shell Eco-marathon

More than 10 teams to contest for the title at the end of October.

A total of 14 teams will compete for the coveted Shell Eco-Marathon SA Champions title to be held at South Africa’s premier motor racing circuit, Kyalami Racetrack in Midrand this October.

High school pupils and tertiary students will design, build and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. The winning teams across categories will be based on the most distance covered using the least amount of energy.

Participating teams include University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Benin and University of Lagos. Participating SA schools include Deutsche Schule Johannesburg; IR Lesolang Secondary; Edward Phatudi; The King’s School Westrand; Maxeke Secondary and
Tokelo Secondary.

Shell Eco-Marathon is supported by America, Europe and Asia, with the 2014 challenge hosted by UJ’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The school is one of five schools within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment that supports rigorous research in green technology and energy efficiency.

The Kyalami Race Way first opened in 1961 and played host to the first South African Grand Prix in 1967. The circuit promises an exhilarating challenge, knuckle-biting entertainment for motor sport enthusiasts, guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The event is focused on inspiring interests in science, engineering, technology, encouraging mobility innovation whist pushing fuel efficiency boundaries.

• Track practice: Saturday 25 October from 8am to 2pm
• Race day: Sunday 26 October from 8.30am to 4pm
• Prize giving: Sunday 26 October at 4pm
