Randfontein racers devours asphalt

Morgenrood finishes overall first, Adlem second at Killarney Raceway.

Proudly supported by the Rose Foundation, the V8 Supercars recently delivered exciting action at a damp and chilly Killarney Raceway.

The spectators who braved the inclement weather were rewarded by the spectacle of the drivers fighting for points at this penultimate round of the Super Series season.

Randfontein racer Ben Morgenrood surprised everyone with a qualifying time of more than a second ahead of fellow Randfontein racer Mackie Adlem in his Kia Randfontein Jaguar.

Matty Maartens lined up in third place with Randfontein racer Roelf du Plessis alongside in fourth place on the grid.

Morgenrood made full use of his pole position in race one, storming into the first corner and remaining at the front until the flag. Adlem kept him honest from his second position, while staying ahead of Franco di Matteo who was on a charge from the back of the grid.

The popular Du Plessis was enjoying his return to V8 Supercar racing and was as competitive as ever, despite losing a wheel in the Saturday morning warm-up session. The partially inverted grid for Race two saw Maartens on pole with Du Plessis, Di Matteo and Morgenrood next in line.

Du Plessis quickly snatched the lead and by the end of the first lap Maartens had been demoted to fourth. The racing was intense, with the first three cars reaching just under 250km/h at the end of the back straight.

Morgenrood was in the lead by lap four, only to be passed by Di Matteo on lap seven, and Adlem soon passed Du Plessis to grab third place.

Unfortunately, Morgenrood picked up an engine problem on the last lap and Adlem took full advantage, storming through to take second behind Di Matteo at the flag. Morgenrood hung on to finish third, followed by Du Plessis in fourth.

Morgenrood took the overall win with Adlem second and Di Matteo in third.

The final round of the Sports and GT Series will take place on 1 November at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria.

Fellow Randfontein racer, Mackie Adlem took overall second place in his Kia Randfontein Jaguar XKR.
