West Rand to come together for Danie Voges

"It's about showing appreciation towards Danie, he has given so much."

Wrestlers as well as passionate fans on the West Rand are encouraged to support two special events to be held in honour of legend Danie Voges.

In a joint effort between the African Punishment Wrestling Association (AWPA) and Danie van Zyl Wrestling, two special events will be hosted on 25 and 26 July at the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre in Newlands.

While APWA will be hosting a Winter Bash on the 25th featuring superstars such Steve Eden, Mr. Wrestling, Dragon Boy, Christopher James Edwards the third, Kyle Ripley, LoudMouth, Ananzi, Two-Face, Dirty Jackson, Danie van Zyl Wrestling have organised an amateur wrestling event.

According to Danie Erasmus of the club, “Danie Voges has been the driving force of South African wrestling for many years and has championed both codes of wrestling.

“Although a stroke has slowed him down, his passion for the sport has never waned. As such the club is putting together an all-day amateur event. This club, made up of underprivileged children in the Newlands and Claremont area, has already produced a number of provincial champions and we will be showcasing them and 150 other wrestlers in the freeto-attend event. The key is showing our appreciation to Danie and giving back to someone who has given so much for the wrestling business in South Africa.”

Doors open on Friday night at 7pm. Entrance is R30 per person, kids under 5 enter for free. Saturday’s event starts at 7am with the weigh-in and runs the whole day.
