South Africans claim swimming medals in Barcelona

Brown and Prinsloo continue to collect medals in the pool for South Africa in final leg.

Distance swimmer Myles Brown and Karin Prinsloo continued to collect medals in the pool on the third and final leg of the Mare Nostrum Series in Barcelona over the weekend.

Brown came from behind to claim the gold medal in the men’s 1 500 metre freestyle on Sunday to add to the silver he won in the 400m freestyle the day before.

The South African swimmer was embroiled in a tight race with Pal Joensen of the Faroe Islands, with his competitor leading the race until the final two laps which saw Brown touch first in a time of 15 minutes, 10.02 seconds (15:10.02).

The day before, on Saturday, Brown claimed a sliver medal in the 400m freestyle event in a time of 3:49.83 behind British swimmer Guy James (3:48.11).

Prinsloo added the women’s 400m freestyle bronze medal to the silver medal she won in the 200m freestyle on Saturday.

Britain’s Jazz Carlin was in rampant form as she won the race in a time of 4:04.03 with Coralie Balmy of France taking second place in 4:07.84 while Prinsloo grabbed the remaining podium spot in 4:09.98.
