Froome pulls out of Tour de France

Favorite crashes out on day five.

Defending champion Chris Froome pulled out of the Tour de France yesterday after crashing three times during the prestigious race’s fifth stage.

Kenyan-born Froome was educated in Johannesburg and started his cycling career in South Africa. He represented Kenya at an under-23 level before choosing to represent Great Britain internationally at an elite level.

Froome was a favourite to win this year’s Tour de France, having helped Sir Bradley Wiggins to victory in 2012 and dominated last year’s race.

Yesterday’s stage featured dangerous cobbles sections which were made more dangerous by rainy weather. The stage was marred by crashes, with many favourites going down.

Froome’s teammate Richie Port will now lead Team Sky, whose tactics were criticised after Wiggins was left out of the Tour de France team.
