Morgenrood takes the win in Cape Town

Local racing legend, Ben Morgenrood takes the win during his visit to the Killarney race track in Cape Town.

Proudly supported by the Rose Foundation, the V8 Supercars promised exciting action at Killarney during their visit to this notorious track on 26 April.

The Cape Town circuit suits the super-fast V8s and these cars reach speeds of over 270 kilometers per hour at the end of the long back straight.

Local racing legend Ben Morgenrood from Indy Oil and GUD, placed his Mustang firmly on pole during qualifying just ahead of Terry Wilford with Mackie Adlem and Franco di Matteo making up the second row of the grid.

The first corner is always eventful and race one saw contact between Franco and Larry.

The Varta Batteries Jaguar of Franco limped back to the pits with a puncture, leaving Ben, Terry and Mackie to fight for first place.

The win was taken by Ben Morgenrood despite Mackie putting in the fastest lap of the race, with veterans Larry Wilford and Willie Hepburn taking third and fourth.

Sadly, Terry Wilford’s engine gave up after only a few laps, as did Steve Herbst’s shortly after.

Steve Smith and Romano Sartori took the minor placings.

The partially inverted grid for race two saw Larry Wilford on pole, with Ben and Mackie starting behind him.

Morgenrood and Adlem soon fought their way to the front, with Larry and Willie Hepburn in hot pursuit.

Franco di Matteo put in a storming run from the back of the grid, passing all the Shelby Sports Cars on lap one and clocking the fastest lap of the second heat.

Ben Morgenrood took the flag just ahead of Mackie Adlem and Franco, followed by Larry Wilford, Willie Hepburn, Steve Smith and Romano Sartori.

Ben Morgenrood took the overall win, with Mackie Adlem second and the consistent Larry Wilford in third.

The next event will be at the East London GP circuit in July.

The Rose Foundation is a non-profit organisation that manages the environmentally acceptable collection, storage and recycling of used lubricating oil in South Africa.

Morgenrood has been a staple in local racing circles for more than 40 years now.

Known as one of the most determined racers ever, he remains at the top of the crop of South African motorsport.

Here’s a video all the way from 1998 of an epic battle between Ben Morgenrood and one time rival and fellow local racing legend, Sarel van der Merwe.
